The celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the beatification of St. John of Nepomuk took place in Nepomuk. It was the biggest event in 2021 in the town, where the world's most famous Czech saint was born around 1340.
Events marking the anniversary were attended by prominent personalities from various areas of public and social life, including President of the Pilsen Region Ilona Mauritzová. She attended the Open Air Nepomuk - Concert in Honour of St. John of Nepomuk held on Augustin Němejc Square on Sunday May 30 2021, which was broadcast live by Czech Television.
The schedule of the celebrations was divided into several blocks including Masses, a church programme, concerts, lectures, exhibitions and other accompanying events. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Cardinal Dominik Duka, Archbishop of Prague and Primate of the Czech Republic, with the participation of all Czech and Moravian bishops. The Mass was followed by a meeting of the Czech Bishops’ Conference and two main concerts - the first with the Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra, the second with the queen of opera Eva Urbanová.
Lectures by renowned experts focused on various topics directly or indirectly related to the theme of St John’s Day. Among the main exhibitions, we should highlight the exhibition of paintings by the academic painter Viktoria Kodl-Janotová, the exhibition of Václav Česák’s sculptures and the exhibition of original furniture from the castle on Zelená hora, loaned to Nepomuk for only one season from the depositories of the Heritage Institute.
The town of Nepomuk lies near the Brdy protected natural area and belongs to popular tourist destinations of the Pilsen Region. Zelená Hora Chateau, the Museum of Saint John of Nepomuk, the Municipal Museum and Gallery and two churches linked to the famous Czech saint rank among the most significant sights of the region.
President of the Pilsen Region Ilona Mauritzová attended an open air concert in Nepomuk on May 30. This concert featuring soprano Eva Urbanová was held in honor of the 300th anniversary of the beatification of St John of Nepomuk .
