Round-table discussion on JANA, a Czech-Bavarian AIDS prevention project
A round-table discussion on the Czech-Bavarian project Jana, which focuses on AIDS prevention, was held at the Pilsen Regional Authority Office on 15 October 2013. The event, which was attended by officials from both countries, was opened by Pilsen Regional Council Member for Social Affairs Zdeněk Honz and District President of the Upper Palatinate Brigitta Brunner.

For fifteen years now, Centrum JANA has assisted prostitutes on the Czech-German border in dealing with their health and social problems.
The main aims are preventing social alienation, promoting social integration, assisting clients in obtaining or regaining social competencies, motivating clients to change high-risk behaviour and reduce the negative impacts of this behaviour, and preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and STDs.
Assistance is concentrated on women at risk of prostitution, commercially exploited persons, people leading a high-risk lifestyle and victims of human trafficking.
The main principles of providing assistance are anonymity, cost-free service, confidence, respect for users’ rights and low-threshold access.
Services provided to clients are:

Assistance exercising rights, justified interests and taking care of personal matters

Arranging contact with a social environment

Assistance services – escorting clients to relevant organisations

Arranging follow-up health and social assistance

Crisis intervention (including a hotline)

Providing conditions for personal hygiene

Free condoms, lubricants and information brochures

Everything about safe sex

Information about HIV/AIDS and other STDs

Pre and post counselling

Free testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and other STDs
